The Address by Prof Luo Xiaoming, Executive President of Beijing Geely University
At the Graduation Ceremony to be held on 19th July 2007 in the Grimsby Town Hall
尊敬的郡长先生和夫人、尊敬的首席执行官先生、尊敬的里兹都市大学副校长女士、尊敬的校董会主席先生、尊敬的丹尼尔·汗校长先生、尊敬的龚建忠总领事先生和夫人、尊敬的张艺华领事、尊敬的杨希雪先生、尊敬的王如君先生、尊敬的斯里兰卡贵宾、女士们、先生们:
Your excellencies, Mr Mayor and Madam Mayoress, Mr Chief Executive of North East Lincolnshire Council, Madam Pro Vice-Chancellor of Leeds Metropolitan University, Mr Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr Principal & Chief Executive of the Grimsby Institute, Mr Consul General and Mrs Gong, Madam Zhang, Mr Yeung, Mr Wang from the People’s Daily London Bureau, Distinguished guests from Sri Lanka, Ladies and Gentlemen：
我很荣幸出席今天的毕业典礼，和诸位一起庆祝大家辛勤劳作的成功和收获。首先，请允许我代表北京吉利大学向今天毕业的所有同学表示诚挚的祝贺和热情的问候！
I am delighted to be here today at the graduation ceremony, to celebrate the success of harvest with you all. First of all, may I offer my sincere congratulations on behalf of Beijing Geely University to all the graduates upon their success with my warmest greetings as well?
四年多以前，我和刘华松副校长有幸在北京与丹尼尔·汗校长和曹群先生相识，我们一见如故，探讨了如何合作开发2+2 联合办学模式，建立一个崭新的国际教育平台。我们一致同意，为了中国青年学生的未来，根据教育市场的需求，从2003年9月起招收第一批工商管理专业荣誉文学士学位的学生。经过四年多来双方的共同努力，首届顺利完成学业的来自北京吉利大学的中国学生和其他中国留学生、英国以及其它国家的学生在今天光荣毕业。作为合作伙伴之一的北京吉利大学的执行校长，我感到格外高兴，并和英方的合作伙伴一样，为你们感到骄傲。
It was over 4 years ago; Dr Liu and I had the pleasure of meeting Daniel and Charles in Beijing and became good friends. We discussed how to work together in developing our joint courses by using the 2+2 model in order to have a brand new platform on international education. We have reached consensus whereby having the 1st cohort of students recruited from September 2003 on the BA (Hons) degree course in Business Management, in response to the demand of the education market in China, as well as for the future of those young Chinese students. Having worked hard for the past 4 years with joint efforts of both sides, we have today when the 1st cohort of Chinese students from Beijing Geely University together with local British students and international students from other countries are graduating with honours. As one of the project partners and being the Executive President of Beijing Geely University, I feel extremely happy and share with my British partners with the sense of pride.
回顾过去、展望未来，我们的合作项目经历了时间和教学质量的考验，突破了国界，积累了经验，成为中英教育合作的一个成功的范例，我因此倍感自豪。我谨此向丹尼尔汗校长表示衷心的祝贺和感谢，他的远见卓识和领导才干，开拓了格里姆斯比在中国的成功！
Looking back and into the future, our joint project having stood the test of time and quality, the groundbreaking achievement has been extraordinary, it has gathered valuable experience and broken national boundaries with unprecedented success, as a model example of Sino-British educational cooperation, and therefore I am very proud. I would like to offer my congratulations and appreciations to Professor Daniel Khan, his vision and leadership ensured the Grimsby Institute’s success in China!
我同时要感谢英国的教师队伍，特别是各位精心教授和辅导中国留学生的各位老师们；也感谢各位家长对孩子们的大力支持以及情感上和经济上的资助。当然，最重要的是各位同学们的四年寒窗之苦，成就了今日的辉煌，换来了荣誉和喜悦。我特意从国内赶来，为你们欢呼喝彩。
I would like to thank for the excellent team of British tutors in Grimsby who worked so hard in teaching and tutoring Chinese students; I also want to say thank you to the parents who offered the students so much support both emotionally and financially. Most of all, it is you, all those students who have been hard working for the past four years, your efforts made sure that you have achieved today’s success in obtaining honour and delight. That’s why I come all the way from China to salute and cheering for you.
我还要感谢东北林肯郡政府和人民，感谢濒临英格兰东海岸的首府之城格里姆斯比。我们的留学生在这里度过了一段他们生活中美好的时光，相信在他们的人生旅途中，这段经历将会使他们珍视和难忘。
Can I say a big thank you to the North East Lincolnshire Council and the local people, and thank you too for the capital town of Grimsby. Our students having spent a memorable period of time in their careers will treasure it as one of the best parts in their lives for years to come.
然而，我想必须提到一位特殊的人物，他是我的同胞和密友，他的不懈努力和投入，确保了我们合作的成功。他不辞辛苦，奔波于两国之间；他事必恭亲，精心照料中国学生，为他们解决问题，包括争取到连年不断的签证顺利成功， 以及在深夜凌晨亲自把求救的学生送到医院。没有他的耕耘和贡献，就没有我们今天的荣耀和欢乐。女士们、先生们：让我代表所有的中国来宾，在这里向我们引为自豪的曹群先生表示感谢！他二十年前在格里姆斯比的成功，成就了今天一批中国青年的未来。历史不会忘记这位对中英友谊和格里姆斯比繁荣昌盛做出贡献的友好使者。
However, I thought that I must mention someone very special, being my fellow countryman and close friend, whose effort and commitment ensured the success of our collaborations; that worked so hard and travelled tirelessly as commuting frequently between the 2 counties in the past 4 years for the sake of the project; being extremely helpful to all the Chinese students by looking after them and solving problems for them including ensuring successive success with their visa applications and approvals, as well as rushing student to the hospital during the small hours; without his hard work and contribution, today’s glory and jubilation will not be possible. Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of all the guests from China, I want to say a huge thank you to Professor Charles Cao Quin as his success in Grimsby over 20 years ago accomplished the success of future generation of Chinese young men and young women and made today’s event possible. History will be kindly remembering him as a wonderful cultural and educational ambassador who contributed a great deal for both the Sino-British friendship and the prosperity of Grimsby.
请允许我也在此感谢祖国的外交官多年来对我们中国留学生的关怀和帮助, 特别是驻曼彻斯特总领事馆在过去四年多来对我们合作项目的大力支持, 包括对英方人员赴华签证的特别照顾。两年前，龚建忠总领事亲临欢迎过今天毕业的中国同学们，与国会下院议员奥斯汀·米切尔先生一道，为当年落成的塔楼国际中心揭幕剪彩。总领馆教育组的张艺华教育领事更是从始至终，多方协助、关怀备至。今天，龚总领事又在百忙之中专程携夫人应邀出席这一隆重的毕业典礼，为同学们祝福，使我们荣幸之余，格外感到祖国的亲切和温暖。
Please also allow me to thank the Chinese senior diplomats who have been supportive to our Chinese students over the years especially the Consulate General in Manchester having offered so much help for our joint programme including preferential visa approvals for relevant British personnel. In particular Mr Gong Jianzhong, the Chinese Consul General in Manchester who kindly welcomed our Chinese students who graduate today almost 2 years ago, when he officially opened the Towers International Centre in Grimsby with Mr Austin Mitchell MP; and today, Mr and Mrs Gong have been very kind once again as coming to attend the graduation ceremony of our 1st group of Chinese students in Grimsby, to witness the historic event and join our celebrations, we feel extremely privileged and grateful as they are presenting China as a nation where we call it motherland. I also would like to acknowledge the great contribution of Madam Zhang Yihua, the Educational Consul at the Consulate General in Manchester who has kindly given her strong support to our joint programmes throughout, and this is actually her third visit to Grimsby.
同时，我想通过今天到场的杨希雪名誉会长先生转达我对汉泊城华人会和本地华侨界人士的亲切问候，感谢各位对我们学生的关照。
Meanwhile, I would like to convey my kind regards to the local Chinese community via Mr Yeung, Honorary President of the Humberside Chinese Association, thank you for looking after our students when they study here in Grimsby.
我还要感谢《人民日报》驻英国首席记者王如君先生从伦敦前来光临盛会，并感谢他在不久前发表的文章中，报道和肯定我们的合作项目。我们期待着把我们的合作做成中外合作办学的品牌，还请您继续关注。
Can I thank Mr Wang Rujun too for travelled from London to be with us today? Mr Wang is the Chief Correspondent at the London Bureau of the Chinese national newspaper the People’s Daily. In an article he wrote earlier in April this year he kindly mentioned our cooperative project to a wide public. Please help us further as we look forward to develop our joint programme into a quality brand in the future.
我是个教育工作者，注重和提倡人格本位。只有培养学生健全的人品人格，才能使他们走上光明的成才之路。教育的发展、公民文化素质的提高，是我毕生的追求。我们都是世界的公民，无论民族、肤色、信仰和国籍，“四海之内皆兄弟”。为了共同的利益、生存、安危和幸福，我们需要和谐相处。作为人类的“灵魂工程师”，教育家责任重大。
Being an educationist, I pay a special attention to promote the high standard of personality for student. I firmly believe that bearing and developing moral quality, good character, and positive personality in life, is crucial in terms of walking on the right path to success. To pursue and promote good education and training of citizenship is my strong belief and lifetime goal. We are citizens of the world, regardless race, colour, religion and nationality; we are brothers and sisters of the planet. We will have to live together in peace and harmony for the sake of our own interest, co-existence and communal security, as well as our ultimate happiness in life. The educationists being the engineers for the soul and human spirit, will have an important role to play in our society.
今天是个喜庆的日子，不仅各位毕业生不会忘记，中国的吉利人也不会忘记。这古老壮观的市政厅作为历史的见证人，将在我们的记忆中永存。
Today is very special and as a date to remember, not only it will stay in the memories of those graduates, but also will stay on with all of us from the Geely Group, together with this magnificent Town Hall which witnessed so many historic events, will have a permanent place in our fond memories.
最后，让我为各位毕业生的未来祝福，相信你们会在人生旅途中乐观地面对挑战，不断完善自我，为人类做出各自的贡献。我坚信：前程似锦，有志者事竟成。
Finally, I offer good blessings to all the graduates for a wonderful future career. I am sure you will be facing all the challenges in life with self-esteem and positive attitude, carrying on to consummate ourselves making our own contributions to the mankind. The future is beautiful and I am a firm believer of the traditional saying – where is a will there is a way.
